The 1973 German Wiretap Scandal
July 28, 1973. The New York Times reveals that the U.S. Army in Germany conducts surveillance of civilians--Germans and Americans--who disagree with U.S. or Army policies. The next day, on July 29, the story appears on the front page of all major German newspapers. This is the beginning of a series of revelations on Military Intelligence activities in Germany.
